Health Engagement ... "More for Less!"

The Challenge

In the current climate there is great pressure on Primary Care Trusts (PCT’s) to achieve ‘more for less’. Preventing illness and promoting wellbeing has become ever more important (for example, QUIPP).

In public health terms, this remains a significant challenge as it has been estimated that 70% of the determinants of health fall outside of the health service’s remit.

In addition, Transforming Community Services (TCS) and World Class Commissioning (WCC) require every PCT to expand and develop new ways of engaging stakeholders, including local people, service users and third sector groups, in the public health debate. Healthy Places, Healthy Lives is a further call to arms aimed at tackling Health Inequalities through local leadership.

TCS and WCC have quality at their core and any new services have to accomplish a balance of efficiency and effectiveness (i.e. doing things right and doing the right things). In the current financial climate, achieving this balance becomes more imperative than ever. These are busy times with stretched resources and many PCT’s are looking to add value to their current expertise without the burden of taking on extra staff.

A Flexible Solution

For over a decade, MISPA developed, delivered and sustained more efficient and effective ways of working.  Our team have national, regional and local expertise having served on a variety of committees such as NICE Obesity CG43, various regional taskforces and think tanks.

In a world where change is the only constant, we support a concept of ‘knowing and doing’, helping people establish a value to applied knowledge and its impact.  Our unique entrepreneurial style combined with our broad academic base offers a blended approach and a range of practical expertise that clients appreciate.

We bridge the gap between policy and practice, our ability to enable conversations between different sectors has seen us work with a variety of PCT’s (e.g. Bolton and Salford), Local Authorities and private sector clients like Barclays Bank. To see how community leaders can be inspired and motivated by MISPA click here (Toxteth, Liverpool 2009) or here (Lancashire 2009/10) to view short videos of our graduates.

Partnership Opportunities

Working with MISPA offers many advantages, benefits and generates value especially in challenging times. For instance, through the provision of a training and events we can:

i) Up skill voluntary sector leaders

ii) Gather relevant data and experiences, and,

iii) Develop a two-way process of engagement in future needs.

Such synergistic actions help your organisation develop better ongoing client relationships and achieve more sustainable engagement.

We have a range of engagement options that can be targeted at local third sector organisations and communities of people.

By operating in a flexible and responsive manner, our range of services can be utilised to support public health agendas such as obesity, children, food and nutrition, addiction, and physical activity, or engagement in strategic issues, planning or consultation. Activities can then be tailored to suit specific areas (from super output areas to sub regions), mobilised immediately or scheduled to suit longer term plans.

Next Steps

MISPA’s preferred approach is to meet and discuss the local and specific needs of a commissioner in order to provide a bespoke package of resources and investment opportunities, where appropriate.
